Our Story: The evolution of Green Artwork
phy•lum |filem| noun : a principle taxonomic category, representing the largest generally accepted groupings of animals and other living things with certain evolutionary traits.
Our story begins with our name. At Phylum Design, we have gathered green artwork, eco friendly furnishings and interior accessories with similar, “evolutionary traits”: Modern design + Mother-nature = Phylum Design
Artist and designer Owen Mortensen founded Phylum Design in order to provide an outlet for his passion for art, design and the environment. While working towards a liberal arts degree at Utah State University, Owen began composing pressed-leaf collages and selling them at local art festivals. This small art business continued to thrive as Owen pursued graduate studies in architecture in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah. After nearly two years studying architecture, Owen realized his true passion was in the creation of his art and slowly emerged as a full time, independent artist.
After years of searching for artists and designers that shared a common vision of quality craftsmanship and clean design inspired by the natural world, Owen founded Phylum Design, full-service design studio and art consulting firm specializing in exceptional green artwork inspired by the simple beauty of nature. At Phylum Design, we’re proud to be at the forefront of an exciting new movement in fine art and design variously described as “Organic Modernism”, “Naturalism” and “Organic Essentialism.” We’re confident that our organization and our vision for sustainable, natural art and design will satisfy your specific needs.
